Dare, Don't Be Afraid to Make Mistakes

By Remez Sasson

Don't worry if you make mistakes. Only people who dare, try, and persevere, complete tasks and achieve success.
It is so comfortable to be passive, make no effort, and stick to the familiar. However, by doing so, we allow external influences shape your life.
Daring, trying new things, and making changes, seem intimidating. It is more comfortable to suffer, complain, and stay in the same place.

Why Daring Is Intimidating?

  • You afraid you might make mistakes.
  • You are afraid to look ridiculous.
  • You want to avoid criticism.
  • There is a lack of self-esteem.
  • There is a lack of self-confidence.
If you wish to let the above list intimidate you, and therefore, be unhappy, complain, and stay where you are, this is your choice. However, if you want to live a greater life, you should consider taking a step beyond your fears and start daring.
It is not so difficult to do.
It is a matter of attitude. It is a matter of changing your mindset. As the saying goes, 'it is all in the mind'.
After the first step, it would seem less intimating to dare, even if you make mistakes and bad choices.
All people who achieved success, any kind of success, dared to try. They did mistakes, and they failed over and again, but they did not give up.

Where Can You Dare?

This depends on you. It is advisable to start with minor matters, and as you gain confidence, do bigger things.
Here are a few suggestions:
  1. Start learning a foreign language.
  2. Go meet new people and friends.
  3. Take a trip abroad.
  4. Redecorate your home.
  5. Ask your boss for a raise.
  6. Start going to the gym.
Dare, don't be Afraid to Make Mistakes.
After gaining some experience you will feel more confident to dare handle bigger projects, such as:
  1. Find a better job
  2. Go back to college or start studying at the University
  3. Make the move you always wanted, to a new neighborhood, a new city, or a different country
  4. Start a business
  5. Turn a hobby into a business
These are just a few of the things you can dare to do.
If you make mistakes, it's all right. Everyone make mistakes. Learn from them and go on. As said earlier, all successful people made mistakes, but they didn't let their mistakes discourage them or deter them.
It's quite simple, though not so easy to dare, and be afraid to make mistakes. This has nothing to do with finance, physical strength or education. It is all a state of mind. It is something inside you.
You need to find the strength and courage within you. You should learn to be courageous and daring, and do things, without the need to be pushed and motivated from the outside.
You have this strength within you, you only need to be conscious of it, and strengthen it. Affirmations, visualization, and inner strength development are the tools to do this.
Learn to be a doer, by taking the initiative and acting now, without procrastinating or hesitation. Start with simple little things to gain experience and confidence.
  • Can you learn to speak fluently a foreign language, without making some mistakes at first?
  • Can you become a great cook, without learning, cooking and experimenting, and making some mistakes along the way?
  • Can you create a successful business, without learning, investing, making mistakes, and trying again?
  • Can you become an expert in any field, before you had enough experience?
Don't worry if you make mistakes on the way. By making mistakes, you learn to improve and do better.
You just have to take action. It's not as difficult as it seems.

THE PLACE OF STUDENTS AND STUDENTS UNIONISM IN TODAY’S NIGERIA

FROM THE STABLE OF NNAMDI AZIKIWE UNIVERSITY, AWKA

She waked up to me that evening like a crystal like diamond, she shaped her teeth in amusement of what I was yet to understand. Most ladies have tried to teach me to become afraid when ladies come to me smiling without reason. But, I am the optimistic type, every news that smile around me always turns out to cause smile to hundreds of those around me. “I am actually a blessing”, I thought. What on earth does she have in mind? I was watching, she was smiling, but yet, I didn’t know the reason why I was watching.
She brought a paper, it looked like a flier of some sort, and the dominant red and yellow colour spoke an interpretation I was yet to understand─ ALUTA STUDENTS LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE with the theme: THE PLACE OF STUDENTS AND UNIONISM IN TODAY’S NIGERIA. No doubt, she had a reason to smile, students leadership is worth conferencing and she is giving me an invitation to be part of it. “Oh! I’m already part of it, why should you think that I am out? “, I asked. “I trust you, I am here just in case”, she replied.
The place is wide and like Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Leadership has been described as "a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task". For example, some understand a leader simply as somebody whom people follow, or as somebody who guides or directs others, while others define leadership as "organizing a group of people to achieve a common goal".
The students in the making are leaders, and to great extent their ability and to a great extent their ability and their courage is the strength of every nation. Ignorance of the popular saying that the youths are the leaders of tomorrow, most students have taken a great ride of leadership, strengthening the fact that the youths are also leaders of the day! The Nigerian situation is in need of unionism although the political environment tries to give a new and none-welcoming definition of unionism. The power of the ‘Aluta’ is the victory that is ‘acerta’ and this victory can only be achieved when your minds and souls commit a romance. That is why I am part of it─ to let the world understand the place of students and student’s unionism in Nigeria. The Aluta Newspaper leads this ride; the request is for students and the general populace in the students community to come with their demands and questions to achieve a together reasoning and a voice of freedom. We are the leaders of tomorrow!
It is said, ‘if nothing is done about anything, things will remain the way they are”. It is with great enthusiasm and unbridled sobriety that I decided to write on this issue that is of uttermost importance to the welfare and growth of our society and the nation at large.
Student unionism began in 1925 with the emergency of West African Student Union (WASU) and was partly pioneered by some Nigerian students in London. They fought the colonial masters for the rights of Africans.

National Union of Nigeria Students (NUNS) inherited the same idealism from WASU and the student union matched on as a platform of change and of informed activism.
The union then enjoyed support from radical intellectuals and academia. The union leaders were purely idealist and fire brands. Under the leadership of Segun Okeowo, NUNS became directly involved in national politics for proper funding of education for Nigeria students.

They suffered all manners of maltreatment yet remain adamant insisting they are fighting against the forces of feudalism, parochialism and tyranny in our political system.
NUNS suffered all forms of brutality under the administration of a man that see nothing good in Nigeria student and who has zero tolerance to student unionism, General Olusegun Obasanjo. He even placed ban on NUNS but kudos to the administration of Alhaji Shehu Shegari’s that lifted the ban leading to birth of National Association of Nigeria Student in 1980.
Looking back, the NUNS/NANS of old were effective and progressive in line with the nature and place of the Universities at the time as a strategic resource for the production of ideas and manpower for societal growth. Students were at the centre of this as agents of change and leaders of tomorrow with strong stake in the future of the community. But today, students are the centre of cultism, fraud and prostitution.
Aside NANS national leadership intellectual collapse, the various structures of the union- state joint committee and students’ unions have either sold to politicians or lack the requisite intellectual wherewithal to lead successful and genuine struggles of students. While I blame the student leaders, I must also blame the school authorities and the state in destroying the legacy of genuine students’ unionism either by buying over of student leaders or by use of naked force like police and victimization to deal with genuine student activists.
It is time the Nigerian students call these leaders to order and stop them from mortgaging us for lucre. It is time we the Nigerian students start afresh and build a new organization that will base its ideas on transformation of the society from the decadent neo-liberal system that prioritize profit for the rich few against the warfare of the people; to an egalitarism system where the wealth of the country will be collectively used for the people’s need against that of imperialism and its hangers-on in the country polity.
We should understand that obstacle to growth of active unionism in Nigerian campuses is lack of focus and cogent reasons of our struggles. It is time we see reason to uphold the genuine legacies of unity that has once existed and return to the status quo and not just participate in the union’s activities to fulfill our ulterior motives.

As Edward Albee would say, “sometimes it is necessary to go a long distance out of the way (to learn) in order to come a short distance correctly”.
We demand that Unizik stand up for our heroes, the legends are coming home. Aluta Leadership Conference is showing us our legends, some have been sung, some have not, but we have decided to sing, and with our voice in one accord we produce a sweet melody. Fellow Nigerian students, our struggle for better tomorrow continues.

Aluta Continua, Victoria Acerta!

THE FUTURE IS NOW: TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR LIFE NOW

We are the leaders of tomorrow.
I just found out that the tomorrow is now!

One of the psychological defense mechanisms I hate is ‘Projection’. We have many reasons for failure, blaming it on him or her. You are never a failure until you begin to blame somebody else.
We may attempt to shift the blame to others, but there is no escaping to the fact that it is the biggest lie to believe that you are not responsible for your own actions.
The best years of your life are the ones in which you decide your problems are your own. You don’t blame them on your mother, the economy or the president. You realize that you control your own destiny
—Albert Ellis—
We build great monuments of emptiness when we think that our success lies in sources other than us. When you accept personal responsibility for your life and your success, the whole world looks different, your world becomes different. You see only two beings, yourself and God. And your capability and ability is widened to set your imagination free. You begin to think outside the square, to be creative, inventive, resourceful, and to think beyond the obvious.
When you know it’s up to you and no one else, you prepare better, study more, learn more, and have greater resolve. God-given abilities and talents surface at this stance, you learn to use more of them and at that show more self-reliance.
The success hints provided in this book becomes productive if you accept that whether you succeed or fail, it’s your decision and responsibility.
Mistakes have hidden powers to help us, but they fail in their mission of helping us because of us. We give up the power to change and improve by crediting the blame on others. When you make a mistake and make an excuse for it, you have made two mistakes.
Take responsibility of your life. Too many people expect little, ask for little and as well receive little. They show responsibility to little dreams and they don’t go farther than those dreams.

FEAR IN THE MAKING OF A LEADER

The world has provided an acronym for the English word FEAR:

F─ False/Fake
E─ Experience
A─ Appearing
R─ Real

The question is: does fear exist? Scholars and Psychologists have put up answers to cub the world’s quest for a solution, but yet fear still grips strong in the nerves of the society. In answer to this question, I go with the supposed acronym of fear.

When you’re afraid, whether at sea or standing in front of your co-workers leading them to the next corporate challenge, you have three choices:
  • Ignore your fears and hope they go away. In fact they don’t go away, but often come back stronger than before because you haven’t dealt with them. You must address your fears in your personal or leadership life or they will gnaw away at you until you do something about them.
  • Face your fears and stand up to them—stare them down and struggle as to who will win. You can try that in 30-foot seas in the middle of a storm, but fear will quite possibly win. How many times have you sat in the lobby of a prospect waiting for your chance to give your presentation? Did your fears go away just because you wanted them to? No, because you have to do more than face your fears.
  • Use fear to your advantage. Embrace your fears. First, you must recognize the fear. Don’t deny it. Know you’re afraid. You know what it feels like—that “on your toes” feeling, adrenalin pumping, palms sweating, heartbeat increasing…It’s at this point you must stop and have a little chat with yourself. You have to decide who is going to win here: Fear or you. Then comes the hard part: accepting the fear, letting it in and embracing it.

Leadership can never be effected where fear rules the leader. A man was asked why he never achieved what he should have achieved and he replied, “things that never happened.” We struggle with the fear of trying, and in the greater sense, the fear of failing. And until the uncertainty in trying and winning is conquered, it seems that fear is the king. Leadership is about overcoming doubts which is the mother of fear, and to achieve this we must develop an extra-ordinary believe system that is immune against shortcomings, against faults and against failure─ this is the making of a leader!

UNLEASH THE GENIUS IN YOU!

The greatest thing a man can do in this world is to make the most
possible out of the stuff that has been given him.
This is Success, and there is no other
—Orison Swett Marden—

You can nurture yourself to a person of integrity whose potential will be fully seen and then fulfill your destiny as God has appointed you to be. One of the great keys in life is to understand who you really are, what your personality is like and what really makes you thick.
#You are a special breed that has never been. You are the highest stratum of the society. You belong to a class that is beyond compare. You are full of superiority that gives especial worth which is meritoriously near the standard or model and eminently good of its kind. You are an expression of distinction, the perfection of superb-ness and effulgence of class.
You are meant for the highest crown of success, created for affecting lives, configured for goodness, packaged to be set apart and set great store by, and ordained to be widely known and honoured for greater achievement.
You are a rare breed with divine and inherent ability to reign, dominate and prosper in every way of your life. You have all you need to live a life of success, wealth and happiness; perfect your personality. You are superior being with top-notch lifestyle. You live life at the top! Your first-string life is first-rate living. Your eminent greatness is well thought of.
You are full of power. You have the right to determining, ruling, governing, and the exercise of that right. You have ability to do all things right by yourself; your capacity for performance is out of this world. You are distinguished; a high class personality with superlative success.
You are happy with what you have gotten; you go beyond yourself to be beyond compare. You are full of premium state that goes beyond a natural or set limit. You are simply too-much! You are a success, getting somewhere. You are exceptionally loaded with everything that results to remarkable vitally superiority.
You are a genius; and I greet the genius in you!
All you need and will ever need to function with your high- empowered faculty is inside you. You are not without inaptness and ineptitude. A friend got it all when he said that everyone of us is created for a purpose and reason. Our purpose is to realize our potential, the ability to exert effort for a purpose within the realm of possibility. Our reason is to make the earth along with the human race and the totality of human experience, more than a match for.
Joe Robbins says, “There is no substitute for effort. Always play up to your full potential in every endeavour. The greatest extravagance of all is the waste of human potential.” There is a definite and infinite power of a genius in you to manifest striking results. Learn how to set your imaginations free, to think outside the square, to be creative, inventive, resourceful and to think beyond the obvious.
Creativity is looking at what everybody else looks at, but seeing what no one else sees. You will see potentials and possibilities that others never see. It is your strength of purpose, be audacious to exercise it.
*Creativity is seeing stepping stones where others see stumbling blocks. Creativity is seeing possibility while others see problems. Creativity is seeing solutions where others are blinded by insurmountable circumstances.
Success is explained by John C. Maxwell as; “knowing your purpose in life. Growing to reach your maximum potential. Sowing seed to benefit others.”
Each of us has the potential and opportunity for success. Life’s heaviest burden is not having the truth to carrythat you are a genius limited only by her awareness of her destiny. A lot of people no longer hope and work for the best; they just hope to avoid the worst. And this leans on their limited understanding of the great reservoir of strength in their ability and capability.
You only can construct processes of imbedding the characteristics which are the requirements if you know the field to embed on. This field is your gift and purpose. Every human being has a gift and a purpose in life, but it is being sadly neglected as even many educated adults are not able to fish out that gift. Have you found your own gift?
When a problem poses itself before you, square up to that situation because it hinders purpose achievements. In Nigeria today, we are confronted by myriads of hard nuts which no-one is really able to crack, making it complicated to achieve our purpose. The economy is riotous. It is worthy to alert a dust to dawn coffin. The nation's educational chain has been vandalized. Religion, then, which is the only opium, our forlorn hope has become a fragile reed.
Articles of success achievements and school education today, aim at assisting students gain understanding both in the theoretical aspect and the dramatic craftsmanship, but don't sing the complete metamorphosis. From an egg to the larva; from the larva to the pupa and then the adult. The 'pupa' is neglected, making the metamorphosis incomplete.
Only schools termed the “conquerors” are the diviners that can tell what hardships the mushroom will go through before it shoots out its umbrella. They would teach students what is gift as well as purpose and ways likely to gain a faster mastery of key passages towards their purpose. Students forget to conjecture the suffering engendered during the reoccurring changes and the teachers forget to conjecture the sufferings engendered by students during the reoccurring changes of life stages.
With the required success artistries that could provide an in-depth analysis of all the important aspects of the taste of knowledge which often provides the basis for context questions, teachers can concise the realistic of gift and purpose into the students. The students should have their minds set towards pursuing their gift and fulfilling their purpose.
Don't think that the life of “April fool” is deplorably going on today. Learn to discover what your gift and purpose is, for every person has a purpose. Know that great achievers are always purpose-driven youths and that is just because a purpose-driven life is a life of progress.
Not everyone will like you or your purpose. I may not know all the secrets of success, but one sure way to failure is trying to please everyone. You are uniquely created to be a person of note whose noteworthiness is worthy of emulation. Don’t let anyone extinguish the fire of greatness in you. Unleash your genius and be a blessing to lives.
(Adapted from a book by Amaraizu Iheanyi Genius, Youth Success.21)
